Yala National Park
Yala National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Sri Lanka. Known for its elusive resident, the Sri Lankan leopard, the park has five blocks, two of which are accessible to visitors. Its diverse landscape, varying from beaches to sand dunes and grasslands, is the most prominent feature of the park. Sri Lankan elephants, leopards, and a number of aquatic birds reside in Yala and can be spotted there.

There isn’t a better way to witness Sri Lanka’s diverse wildlife than to go on a safari tour accompanied by an experienced guide. Udawalawe National Park, for instance, is one of the most visited national parks known for safaris. Elephants are the main attraction, but the park is also home to a number of other mammals like wild boar, crocodiles, chital and sambar deer. An array of bird species, including white-bellied sea eagle, shikra, and crested serpent eagle, take shelter here, too.

Known fondly by the locals as “Little Sigiriya” it is an ancient Buddhist cave temple built on a high natural rock. It has four other smaller rocks around it and is formally recognised as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka. The rock structure of this temple is impressive, and it is ideal at sunrise or sunset. Not for the faint of heart though as there are several steps to the top!
